The recommended minimum width of a landing area next to a sink is 18 inches. This standard is primarily aimed at ensuring functionality within kitchen and bathroom design. An 18-inch landing area allows for the safe placement of items such as dishes, utensils, or toiletries while utilizing the sink. This space plays a crucial role in enhancing efficiency and safety—reducing the likelihood of spills or accidents that can occur when items are placed too close to the sink or on its edge.

Regarding the other dimensions, while wider landing areas can provide additional convenience, they are not considered the minimum requirement in most building codes and guidelines. Dimensions such as 20 inches, 24 inches, or even larger might be preferable in certain designs, but they exceed the minimum standard of 18 inches as established by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and other relevant bodies. Thus, the 18-inch recommendation strikes a balance between optimal functionality and spatial efficiency in kitchen and bathroom layouts.
